WHAT IS SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY?

Sports physiotherapy is a specialised branch of physiotherapy that focuses on the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries related to sports and exercise. Physiotherapists who specialise in sports physiotherapy work with athletes and active individuals to optimise their performance, prevent injuries, and facilitate recovery.

The primary goals of sports physiotherapy include:

Injury Evaluation and Diagnosis: Evaluation of the extent of the injury, identify underlying causes, and provide a diagnosis. This may involve conducting physical examinations, assessing range of motion, strength, flexibility, and performing special tests or imaging studies such as X-rays or MRIs.

Treatment and Rehabilitation: Sports physiotherapists develop personalised treatment plans tailored to each individuals’ specific needs and goals. Treatment may include; manual therapy techniques such as joint mobilisation, manipulation, massage and dry needling as well as therapeutic exercises and mobility routines.

Return to Sport and activity: Once the acute phase of injury has passed, sports physiotherapists work with individuals to restore function, strength, flexibility, and endurance to safely return them to their sport or activity. This often involves progressive rehabilitation programs designed to gradually reintegrate the individual back into training and competition while minimising the risk of re-injury.

Injury Prevention: Physiotherapists assess movement patterns, biomechanics, and training routines to identify potential areas of weakness or imbalance that could lead to injury. They then develop strategies to address these issues through exercises, stretches, and corrective techniques.

Performance Enhancement: Beyond injury management, sports physiotherapists also play a role in optimising athletic performance. They may provide guidance on proper warm-up and cool-down routines, biomechanical analysis, strength and conditioning programs, and injury prevention strategies to help athletes perform at their best.
